Japa: Nurses shouldn’t be stopped from seeking greener pastures abroad – Peter Obi

Former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has said nurses and other professionals travelling overseas for greener pastures should not be stopped.

Obi stated this at St Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha on Monday.

Obi, who donated money to the institution, noted that education and health are the currencies with which people will transact in the future.

The former Anambra governor, who said Nigeria has over 200 million people, noted that there is no need to restrict people from travelling out of the country for greener pastures.

Rather, he said Nigeria’s leaders should concentrate on training more people as foreign remittances can be a form of revenue for the country

“What we are doing is not charity, we are rather investing in you. We need to invest in knowledge and health because it is the future.

“Investing in you will ensure your greatness. Your profession is lucrative, you’re being looked for all over the world.

“I told Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria that they should stop denying anybody from leaving Nigeria for greener pastures.

“We have 200 million people, let us educate them. Let those who want go out to go and let those who want to stay should stay. Diaspora remittance is also a form of revenue generation.

“If you see me going round trying to donate, it is not anything but because we want to make life better for you all. I came here so I can donate to you. My children will not attend that university, and I can sit down and use the money to add more chieftaincy to my name, but that is not be how to develop the future.

“I will be in college of nursing Anyingba tomorrow, they need my assistance to get accreditation and I will be there to support them, so that they can get it,” Obi said.

Bauchi: Only 23% out of 381,364 pregnant women take folic acid supplements

The United Nations Children’s Fund , UNICEF has expressed concern over the low intake of iron and folic acid supplements by pregnant women in Bauchi State.

Nutrition Specialist with UNICEF, Philomena Irene, made this known on Tuesday during a one-day inception meeting focused on scaling up Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) for pregnant women.

Citing the 2018 National Demographic Health Information Survey (NDHIS), Irene revealed that only 23 percent of the 381,364 pregnant women in Bauchi State receive iron and folic acid supplementation, a critical measure to reduce the risks of low birth weight, maternal anemia, and iron deficiency.

This is as she disclosed that under the new scale-up initiative, Bauchi State has received 134,280 bottles of multiple micronutrient supplements, MMS, with additional supplies expected as the project progresses.

The Nutrition specialist stated further that UNICEF will collaborate with the Bauchi State Government to ensure MMS is incorporated into the state’s annual procurement plans, adding that funds for MMS procurement will be allocated through the Child Nutrition Fund.

DAILY POST reports that the life-saving initiative organised by the state government in collaboration with UNICEF and Alive and Thrive, is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, BMGF.

“We are here today to launch the scale-up of multiple micronutrient supplements with the aim of improving pregnancy outcomes in Bauchi State,” Irene stated.

She further explained that the initiative will strengthen antenatal care platforms, enabling the delivery of high-impact maternal nutrition interventions across the state.

Irene added that it will also build the capacity of health workers to accurately forecast and manage MMS distribution to pregnant women using the Logistics Health Management Information System (LHIMS) and DHIS 2 platforms.

“The scale-up of MMS for pregnant women aligns with Nigeria’s goal to reduce anemia among pregnant women by 40 percent by 2025 and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of reducing anemia among pregnant women by 50 percent by 2030.’’

Irene assured me that UNICEF will continue to support the Bauchi State Government in mitigating anemia in pregnancy and extending MMS coverage to all pregnant women in the state

Professor Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka, a soil science expert at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, has cautioned farmers against planting crops at dumpsites, warning that it could lead to cancer. Speaking during a community outreach event, she expressed concerns about poor soil texture in the southeast region and advocated for measures to mitigate looming food insecurity. Onwuka identified harmful cultural practices such as bush burning, population pressure, climate change, erosion, and indiscriminate fertilizer use as major factors affecting soil fertility and leading to poor yields. She warned farmers to avoid planting crops at waste dump sites, as heavy metals like mercury, lead, and chromium can be absorbed by crops and lead to cancer and other health conditions. The professor also addressed the recent surge in food prices, encouraging Nigerians to grow their own crops. She demonstrated biochar production and organic fertilizer conversion using domestic and agricultural waste, urging Abia farmers to utilize MOUAU's community services to boost food production. Onwuka lamented the difficulty rural women face in accessing fertilizers and emphasized the importance of extending research innovations to rural farmers to enhance food production in Abia and Nigeria.

Pharmacist Umeh Camillus Chibueze, MD/CEO of Camillus Pharmaceuticals, has warned that many people are unaware they have been infected with cholera, a highly infectious disease that can lead to dehydration and death if left untreated. Chibueze attributes the spread of cholera to poor sanitation, crowding, and inadequate healthcare, and criticizes the government for not doing enough to stem the tide. Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, found in contaminated food or water. Symptoms include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can lead to death if left untreated. Chibueze notes that most people infected with cholera are unaware of their status, and can still infect others through contaminated water or food. To prevent the spread of cholera, Chibueze recommends avoiding tap water, well water, raw food, and undercooked seafood. He also advises drinking bottled water, eating prepackaged food, disinfecting water, washing fruits and vegetables with clean water, and avoiding street vendor food. Chibueze emphasizes the importance of hand hygiene, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Chibueze also criticizes the government's response to the cholera outbreak, citing a lack of effective policy and awareness. He calls for increased education and awareness, similar to the approach taken by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US. By taking preventive measures and improving healthcare infrastructure, Chibueze believes that cholera can be prevented and controlled.

Dynamic Ambassadors for Social Transformation and Orientation Initiative, a advocacy group, has condemned the continued mistreatment of Nigerians in diaspora, describing the situation as alarming. The group visited the headquarters of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja to protest the general maltreatment of Nigerian citizens abroad, with a specific focus on the detention of Pastor Benjamin Egbaji in Benin Republic. According to DAILY POST, Nigerians had recently staged a protest at the Benin Republic Embassy in Abuja, urging the Nigerian government to intervene in Pastor Egbaji's case and address the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in several countries. Samson Eze, media coordinator of the group, led the delegation to NiDCOM and stated that over 5,000 Nigerians are currently detained in Benin Republic, in addition to Pastor Egbaji. Eze expressed disappointment that the Nigerian government has not taken sufficient action to address the situation, despite the country's proximity to Nigeria. He called on the government to apply the principle of reciprocity and demonstrate its power in response to the unacceptable behavior from the authorities in Benin Republic. The group also suggested that Pastor Egbaji may have been set up due to his popularity in the country, and lamented the hatred and victimization of Nigerians in diaspora. Responding, NiDCOM spokesman Abdur-Rahman Balogun assured the group that the government has intervened in Pastor Egbaji's case by providing additional legal representation, which he believes will help in his case. Balogun stated that the government will apply diplomatic efforts to ensure justice for the Nigerian detainee, but advised Nigerians to be law-abiding in their host countries. He emphasized that the government's intervention would be more effective if cases against Nigerians abroad are not based on criminality and infringement of the laws of their host countries. The group's visit to NiDCOM is a follow-up to their previous protests and calls for the government to take action against the maltreatment of Nigerians in diaspora. The continued detention of Pastor Egbaji and other Nigerians in Benin Republic has sparked outrage among Nigerians, with many calling for the government to take decisive action to protect its citizens abroad.

Abia pledges to support Federal Medical Centre – Gov Otti

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has pledged the state government's full support for the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia to successfully complete its ongoing construction of a new accident and emergency ward. The commitment was made during a meeting between Governor Otti and Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi, the chief medical director of the health center, as the governor made a visit to the facility.

Currently, the existing accident and emergency ward at FMC Umuahia is limited in size and lacks the necessary equipment to effectively accommodate the substantial influx of patients that are admitted on a daily basis. To address this challenge, the center is undertaking the construction of a new wing dedicated to accident and emergency services.

As the sole operational public medical facility in Abia State equipped to manage both emergency cases and other secondary and tertiary health concerns, FMC Umuahia plays a critical role in healthcare delivery.

During his visit to the center, Governor Otti shared his intentions. He expressed his purpose in personally inspecting the hospital and connecting with patients undergoing treatment for various medical conditions. Demonstrating his deep commitment, Otti assured that he would personally cover the medical bills of the patients he encountered during his visit.

In response to Governor Otti's visit and his compassionate gestures, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi extended his gratitude. He praised the governor's compassionate and proactive approach, describing it as an unprecedented display of kindness.

The governor's involvement and assurance of support for the completion of the new accident and emergency ward at FMC Umuahia reflect his administration's dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and accessibility for the benefit of the citizens of Abia State. Through collaborative efforts between the state government and the medical center, the prospect of enhanced emergency care services emerges, promising a brighter and more efficient future for healthcare delivery in the region.
