The Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Sunny James, alongside his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, recently voiced their call for the federal government to establish modular refineries and petroleum depots in the state. Akwa Ibom is one of Nigeria's oil-producing states, making it a crucial location for such facilities.
The demand was made during a protest against the removal of fuel subsidy and the resulting hardships faced by Nigerians. The workers from both NLC and TUC, carrying placards with various demands, marched to the Government House, State House of Assembly, and major streets in Uyo, the state capital.
Comrade Abang, the TUC Chairman, emphasized the importance of functional refineries for the nation's economy. He also stressed the necessity for the government to release palliatives to micro, small, and medium enterprises to stimulate economic growth, including salary increments for workers.
Comrade James, the NLC Chairperson, expressed regret that despite being an oil-producing state, Akwa Ibom lacked essential facilities like modular refineries and petroleum depots. He believed that having such facilities would contribute to reducing the price of petroleum products in the state.
Moreover, Comrade James observed a lack of political will from the Presidential Steering Committee to execute the promised palliatives. He asserted that Nigerians should not continue to be taken for granted and demanded the government's prompt action in addressing the prevailing challenges.
In response to the protest and the workers' demands, Governor Umo Eno assured the organized labor that his administration would establish a palliative committee to ensure the effective distribution of palliatives in the state. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by the citizens and expressed appreciation for the peaceful nature of the protest.
Governor Eno revealed that the state government had received a circular of the federal government's palliatives released to states and appealed for ten more days to commence distribution. He promised to work towards the acquisition of buses from Innoson Motors to benefit the workers.
Additionally, the governor announced the release of one billion naira to address the gratuity of primary school teachers, a significant step in fulfilling his commitment to public service.
The joint call by the NLC and TUC for the establishment of modular refineries and petroleum depots in Akwa Ibom State highlights the importance of such facilities in an oil-producing region. The protest also brings attention to the need for palliatives to alleviate economic hardships faced by Nigerians. Governor Umo Eno's responsiveness and commitment to addressing the workers' concerns demonstrate the government's willingness to find solutions and ensure the welfare of the citizens. As the state awaits the implementation of these measures, it is essential for all stakeholders to work together towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
