The sports world is mourning the loss of Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically passed away after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, in a domestic dispute. Cheptegei, a talented marathon runner, represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympics and finished 44th in the women's marathon event.
Horrific Incident and Severe Injuries
The incident occurred in Cheptegei's home in Western Trans Nzoia County, Nairobi, on Sunday. Ndiema allegedly poured petrol on Cheptegei and ignited it, leaving her with severe burns covering 75% of her body. Ndiema also sustained burn injuries and is receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Dispute Over Land Ownership
The attack reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over land ownership, which Cheptegei's parents claim she had purchased to be closer to the region's renowned athletic training centers.
A Pattern of Violence Against Athletes
Cheptegei's death follows a disturbing pattern of violence against athletes in the region. In 2021, Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten, with her husband named as the suspect. In 2022, Kenyan-born athlete Damaris Mutua was found dead in a house in Iten, with her boyfriend identified as the suspect.
Rest in Peace, Rebecca Cheptegei
The sports community is shocked and saddened by Cheptegei's tragic death. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and fellow athletes during this difficult time.
