Tinubu redeploys three Ministers, assigns new roles to others

President Bola Tinubu has given his endorsement for the reassignment of three Ministers, a development that has been detailed in an official statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.

One of the key changes involves the relocation of Engr. Abubakar Momoh from his previous role at the Federal Ministry of Youth to a new position at the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Development. Simultaneously, the responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Youth will soon be taken up by a Minister-designate, as part of the upcoming reassignment plans.

Moreover, the Ministers-designate designated for the Federal Ministries of Transportation, Interior, and Marine & Blue Economy have undergone a significant reshuffling:

(B) Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo will assume the responsibilities of the Honourable Minister of Interior.

(C) Hon. Sa’idu Alkali is slated to serve as the Honourable Minister of Transportation.

Subsidy removal palliatives: Gov Fintiri constitutes 20-member distribution committee

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has taken a proactive step in addressing the potential impacts of fuel subsidy removal on his state's population. To manage the distribution of palliative items aimed at alleviating these effects, the Governor has established a 20-member implementation committee.

According to an announcement from Humwashi Wonosikou, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, this committee encompasses a diverse array of organizations, agencies, groups, and individuals. The main objective of this collective effort is to ensure a streamlined and equitable distribution of assistance throughout the state.

The initial phase of distribution will encompass essential provisions like grains and other vital food items. This strategic initiative is anticipated to extend immediate relief to the people of Adamawa State, helping them navigate the challenges brought about by the removal of fuel subsidies.

Heading the committee is Awwal Tukur, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), who will oversee the coordination of efforts and decision-making processes. The committee's composition reflects a comprehensive approach, including representation from various sectors of society.

The lineup comprises distinguished members, including two prominent first-class chiefs, two representatives from the National Assembly, two members from the state House of Assembly, the Commissioner of Humanitarian Services for the state, as well as the Head of Service. Moreover, the committee encompasses key figures such as the state's ALGON chairman, commanders of both the 23 Armoured Brigade Yola and the Air Force Base Yola, the Commissioner of Police, the director of DSS (Department of State Services), and the commandant of NSCDC (Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps).

Community and religious organizations are also integral parts of the committee, with representation from CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria), the Muslim Council, NUJ (Nigeria Union of Journalists), NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress), TUC (Trade Union Congress), and NCWS (National Council of Women's Societies). Additionally, a representative from the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) will serve as the committee's secretary, ensuring efficient administrative support.

While the Government House in Yola did not explicitly mention the origin of the palliative items, it's notable that Adamawa State, along with other states, is set to receive a five billion naira fuel subsidy removal allocation from the Federal Government. This funding will contribute to the resources available for the state's palliative efforts, reinforcing the Governor's commitment to the welfare of his constituents.

NDLEA busts three syndicates in Lagos, arrests drug baroness, four kingpins

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully dismantled three illicit drug syndicates operating within Lagos State. This commendable achievement was recently announced by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, through an official statement issued on a Sunday.

Babafemi revealed that the coordinated efforts of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of NDLEA led to the dismantling of these three major drug trafficking networks.

A significant breakthrough was the arrest of Faith Ebele Nwankwo, a female leader of one of the syndicates. On August 9, NDLEA operatives apprehended her at her residence located at House 6, C Close, 3rd Avenue, Festac area of Lagos. She was intercepted shortly after returning from a warehouse at Plot 3432 Sola Akinsola Street, Divine Estate, Amuwo Odofin. Here, she had loaded eight cartons of tramadol 225mg into an unmarked white Honda Pilot SUV. A search of her residence and the warehouse yielded an astonishing discovery: 2,750,000 pills of Tramaking, a brand of Tramadol 225mg and 250mg, packed within 39 cartons, with a total weight of 1,916 kg. The drugs, SUV, and the suspect were taken into custody, marking a significant dent in the syndicate's operations.

Another syndicate dealing in cocaine and Canadian Loud faced a similar fate on August 4. Tracked to Atlantic Nominee Estate in the Lekki-Ajah area, the members were apprehended in possession of a Toyota Highlander SUV loaded with 8.49kg of cocaine and 10.3 kg of Canadian Loud, intended for distribution. The arrest of Urama Chinemelum Precious, 32, and Adelakun Ilelabayo Oluade, 55, was followed by a subsequent operation at Chinemelum's residence in Eti-Osa, leading to the recovery of an additional 18 blocks of Loud, weighing a total of 18.5kg.

The third syndicate's downfall occurred on August 5 when Udeh Vincent Ogbonna, 53, and Okonkwo Ifeanyi Uzozie, 50, were apprehended at a commercial bus terminal in Jibowu, Yaba. Their capture came just as they were about to dispatch 25kg of ephedrine hydrochloride to the Southeast. This duo was part of a larger syndicate engaged in the importation, distribution, and diversion of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production.

The dismantling of these syndicates underscores the relentless efforts of NDLEA in curbing drug-related crimes and maintaining the safety of the community.

I warned against ‘Emilokan’ politics – Pastor Tunde Bakare

In a thought-provoking reflection, Pastor Tunde Bakare, the serving overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, revisited his prior cautionary message to Nigerians about the perils of what he termed "Emilokan" politics. The Yoruba phrase, signifying 'It's my turn,' gained prominence during President Bola Tinubu's 2023 election campaign. Bakare contended that the concept of Emilokan holds a latent tendency toward authoritarianism.

Addressing his congregation, Bakare recalled, "I vividly remember the warning I sounded to the Nigerian populace back in January 2023 in my discourse titled 'Bridging the gap between politics and governance.' I cautioned that the politics driven by entitlement, the 'emilokan' variant of politics, could give rise to a presidency with unchecked power, one that might veer towards autocracy and become intolerant of dissent."

Expressing his reservations about the proposed military intervention by ECOWAS in the Republic of Niger, Bakare remarked, "Nigeriens' local support for Nigeria is presently at an all-time low. Thus, embarking on warfare would prove counterproductive. While we unequivocally denounce coup d'états in West Africa, it's crucial for African leaders to engage in profound self-examination. We urge Nigeria to demonstrate strong leadership during this critical juncture. The central question remains whether President Tinubu possesses the moral leadership capacity, even within the confines of the nation."

Worth noting is Bakare's participation in the previous year's All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary, which ultimately saw the emergence of Tinubu as the party's flagbearer. This dynamic adds an additional layer of significance to Bakare's observations and reflections on the current political landscape.

Pay outstanding arrears, wrap up negotiations on living wage – Federal workers tell FG

The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has issued a plea to the federal government, urging the prompt settlement of all pending arrears owed to workers. In addition to this, the forum has implored the government to devise a comprehensive plan for the payment of a cost of living allowance before the close of this month.

Comrade Andrew Emelieze, the National Coordinator of the FWF, communicated these concerns through a statement released to DAILY POST on Wednesday. Emelieze underscored that Nigeria's already challenging economic landscape has been further exacerbated by the recent announcement of the removal of fuel subsidies.

Emelieze emphasized that the withdrawal of fuel subsidy has precipitated a substantial crisis in the cost of living throughout the country. As the third month since the subsidy's elimination unfolds, the nation has witnessed a sharp escalation in the prices of goods and services. Unfortunately, wages have remained stagnant, significantly eroding the purchasing power of Nigerian workers.

In response to these pressing challenges, Emelieze called upon essential stakeholders to take concerted action. The Federal Workers Forum extends its call to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), and the federal government to expedite negotiations surrounding a living wage for Nigerian workers. The forum emphasizes the need for these discussions to culminate in decisive resolutions by the end of September 2023.

The FWF's appeal serves as a reminder of the intertwined challenges facing the country's workforce, as well as the critical role played by negotiations and decisions affecting wages and allowances. As the government grapples with economic complexities, the concerns raised by the FWF highlight the urgency of addressing arrears and implementing measures to alleviate the adverse effects of the fuel subsidy removal on the cost of living for workers across Nigeria.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has pledged the state government's full support for the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia to successfully complete its ongoing construction of a new accident and emergency ward. The commitment was made during a meeting between Governor Otti and Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi, the chief medical director of the health center, as the governor made a visit to the facility.

Currently, the existing accident and emergency ward at FMC Umuahia is limited in size and lacks the necessary equipment to effectively accommodate the substantial influx of patients that are admitted on a daily basis. To address this challenge, the center is undertaking the construction of a new wing dedicated to accident and emergency services.

As the sole operational public medical facility in Abia State equipped to manage both emergency cases and other secondary and tertiary health concerns, FMC Umuahia plays a critical role in healthcare delivery.

During his visit to the center, Governor Otti shared his intentions. He expressed his purpose in personally inspecting the hospital and connecting with patients undergoing treatment for various medical conditions. Demonstrating his deep commitment, Otti assured that he would personally cover the medical bills of the patients he encountered during his visit.

In response to Governor Otti's visit and his compassionate gestures, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi extended his gratitude. He praised the governor's compassionate and proactive approach, describing it as an unprecedented display of kindness.

The governor's involvement and assurance of support for the completion of the new accident and emergency ward at FMC Umuahia reflect his administration's dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and accessibility for the benefit of the citizens of Abia State. Through collaborative efforts between the state government and the medical center, the prospect of enhanced emergency care services emerges, promising a brighter and more efficient future for healthcare delivery in the region.

Naval Commander Macdonald Ubah (Rtd), the Senior Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Governor of Abia State, reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the current administration in Abia to confront and combat criminal activities occurring across the state. In a recent interview conducted in Umuahia, Ubah emphasized the administration's dedication to upholding peace and security within Abia's borders.

Highlighting the administration's proactive approach, Ubah revealed that the state government has established a robust security architecture. This strategic framework aims to bolster intelligence gathering and enhance surveillance techniques, thereby fortifying the state's capabilities in crime prevention and detection.

Ubah took a retrospective view, shedding light on the efforts of previous administrations under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia. He recounted instances where various criminal factions, including kidnappers and other lawless elements, were placated to halt their destructive activities and cease the pillaging of public assets.

Under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, the current administration is committed to a new era of uncompromising action against criminal elements. Ubah firmly stated that the days of succumbing to the demands of ruthless abductors and bandits through ransom payments are over. The state government stands resolved to decisively address any threats to the peace and security of both the state and its residents.

Expressing deep concern over recent events, Ubah denounced the tragic killing of two police officers in Aba, the bustling commercial hub of Abia State. The incident stemmed from a clash between security agencies and traders at the Ariaria International market, underscoring the complex security challenges faced by the state.

As Abia State confronts these multifaceted security issues head-on, the resolute stance of the present administration, coupled with the implementation of a comprehensive security framework, seeks to enhance safety, protect lives, and preserve the tranquility of the region. The state's dedication to eradicating criminality and fostering a secure environment remains steadfast, reflecting a commitment to the well-being of its citizens and the progress of the state as a whole.

Azman shuts down operation, sends staff on ‘compulsory leave’

Azman Air Services Limited has taken the step to implement compulsory unpaid leave for all its staff members, citing ongoing C-checks on its aircraft and the substantial cost of operations as the primary reasons behind this decision.

Nurudden Aliyu, the spokesperson for the airline, confirmed the development to TheCable newspaper. He clarified that the temporary suspension of operations was driven by a confluence of factors, chiefly the necessity for C-checks on their Boeing 737 aircraft designated for domestic flights.

The C-check procedure involves an extensive examination, overhaul, repair, replacement of parts, and preventive maintenance for an aircraft. This comprehensive assessment is meticulously executed in accordance with airframe manufacturer guidelines and planning documentation.

Aliyu offered insight into the situation, revealing that two of the airline's planes had already been dispatched to a maintenance facility in Turkey. However, a backlog at the maintenance hangar had caused delays in the process. He further elaborated that the other two aircraft used for operations were also due for maintenance, and the plan was to have them undergo C-checks as well. One of the planes had reached the 90% completion mark, leading the airline to anticipate that two of its aircraft would be operational once again by October.

Given the financial implications associated with these maintenance activities and the resultant operational limitations, the management made the difficult decision to place the company's operations on hold temporarily. This move was prompted by the substantial financial strain brought on by the maintenance and operational challenges.

Internally, the airline issued a memorandum titled 'Placement of Leave Without Pay' to its employees, signaling the implementation of unpaid leave. The memo, signed by Magaji Misau, the airline's Human Resources Manager, outlined the circumstances leading to this decision. It pointed to the suspension of domestic operations due to aircraft being committed to C-checks, with extended completion timelines provided by the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.

The memo conveyed the management's directive, stating that all employees would be placed on unpaid leave from August 1, 2023, onwards. This measure underscores the company's efforts to navigate the financial and operational challenges it currently faces while maintaining transparency with its workforce.

As Azman Air endeavors to manage its aircraft maintenance and operational expenses, the implementation of unpaid leave represents a strategic response to a complex and multifaceted situation. The airline's actions exemplify the delicate balance that often characterizes business decisions aimed at sustaining long-term viability in the aviation industry.

Senators get credit alerts secretly — but Akpabio pressed the alarm, says Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani, has shed light on a common practice among legislators involving discreet payments away from public scrutiny. Sani's revelation comes in the wake of a recent gaffe by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who inadvertently disclosed that lawmakers had been paid during their recess.

The incident unfolded after the upper legislative chamber concluded the screening and confirmation process for ministerial nominees put forth by President Bola Tinubu. Following the exercise, the senators adjourned plenary sessions until September 26.

However, as the session neared its conclusion, Senate President Akpabio made an unexpected announcement. He informed his fellow senators that Magaji Tambuwal, the clerk of the national assembly, had disbursed funds to their various accounts to facilitate an enjoyable holiday period.

A twist of irony ensued as the senate president's words were broadcasted live on television and captured by press cameras. Realizing the unintentional exposure, Akpabio swiftly retracted his statement, explaining that the funds were meant to support their holiday plans and ensuring their safe return.

This incident, albeit accidental, has reignited discussions surrounding the allocation of funds to lawmakers. The opacity surrounding the salaries and allowances of federal legislators has long been a topic of public debate.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Shehu Sani, who served as a senator between 2015 and 2019, shared his perspective on the matter. He highlighted that the process of crediting legislators' accounts typically occurs discreetly, away from public attention. Akpabio's inadvertent revelation inadvertently brought this practice into the spotlight, momentarily exposing a usually concealed aspect of legislative operations.

The incident serves as a reminder of the intricacies and nuances that characterize the realm of politics and governance. While the specific details of legislators' remuneration remain veiled, this instance offers a glimpse into the intricacies of how financial matters are managed within the legislative domain. As public discourse continues to unfold, the inadvertent slip by the senate president prompts contemplation on the transparency and accountability of the financial aspects of Nigeria's legislative processes.

Latest: Tinubu meets Wike, El-Rufai in Aso Rock

In a significant political development, President Bola Tinubu is presently engaged in a high-level discussion with former governors Nyesom Wike and Nasir El-Rufai at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, as reported by Daily Trust.

According to the publication, Nyesom Wike arrived at the State House at approximately 1:40 pm, while Nasir El-Rufai entered the presidential wing of Aso Rock around 2 pm, indicating the commencement of their meeting.

Both Nyesom Wike and Nasir El-Rufai are currently in the spotlight as potential ministerial nominees. Wike has already undergone the Senate's screening process and received confirmation for his ministerial appointment. On the other hand, Nasir El-Rufai's situation is more complex due to an alleged pending security report, which has yet to be resolved.

Rumors and speculations have been circulating that concerted efforts are being made to ensure the successful confirmation of Malam El-Rufai for a ministerial role. The exact nature of the discussions between President Tinubu, Wike, and El-Rufai remains undisclosed, leaving room for speculation about the potential implications of this meeting on Nigeria's political landscape.

This gathering of prominent political figures underscores the intricate dynamics and negotiations that take place behind the scenes in the country's political corridors. As these leaders convene to address pertinent matters, the outcomes of their deliberations could have far-reaching consequences for the nation's governance and future trajectories.

Resident Doctors Suspend Planned Protest, Say Strike Continues

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily breakfast programme, the President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Innocent Orji, shed light on the current status of their industrial action. While the planned protest that was slated to commence on Wednesday morning has been temporarily put on hold, the ongoing strike by the association continues unabated. Orji revealed that the National Executive Council has resolved to revisit the situation after a 72-hour interval.

Orji emphasized that the decision to suspend the protest does not signify a retreat from their demands. Rather, it is a strategic move to reassess their course of action. The NARD President reiterated the gravity of the situation, highlighting the urgent need to address the healthcare sector's challenges. He stressed that the lack of an adequate number of doctors in hospitals inevitably affects the quality of healthcare delivery, thereby affecting both the medical professionals and the general populace.

The heart of the matter lies in the association's eight fundamental demands, which they consider crucial for improving the healthcare landscape. One of the chief concerns is the depletion of medical staff due to factors like brain drain and unfortunate demises. Orji asserted that this issue must be promptly addressed to prevent further deterioration of the healthcare system. He questioned the government's delay in implementing the guidelines outlined by a ministerial committee, which was established earlier in the year. These guidelines are aimed at streamlining the recruitment process for new doctors, ultimately curbing the brain drain phenomenon.

Expressing his disappointment, Orji conveyed that the government's commitment to fulfilling the association's demands has been lacking. Despite previous dialogues and discussions, the desired progress has not been achieved. This sentiment underscores the association's persistence in advocating for better conditions for its members and an improved healthcare system for the nation.

The decision to suspend the planned protest stemmed from a recent meeting between the NARD executive and the Senate leadership, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The meeting provided an opportunity for dialogue and potential avenues for resolving the ongoing crisis. It is worth noting that the association embarked on a "total and indefinite strike action" on July 25, 2023, citing multiple grievances, including the need to address doctor shortages and a demand for a 200% increase in salary for its members.

As the situation unfolds, the fate of Nigeria's healthcare sector hangs in the balance. The actions taken by NARD and the response of the government will undoubtedly shape the future of medical services in the country. The journey toward a stronger, more resilient healthcare system continues, with the hope that meaningful solutions will be found to address the pressing concerns raised by the dedicated medical professionals of NARD.

Tax Committee Chair Advocates Suspension of VAT on Diesel to Counter Fuel Subsidy Removal

Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms, has suggested the suspension of Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel as a measure to alleviate the economic repercussions stemming from the elimination of fuel subsidies. Oyedele made this proposal during an appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily breakfast program on Wednesday.

Addressing the pressing need for immediate action, Oyedele emphasized the importance of targeting "low-hanging fruits" within the first 30 days of the committee's operations. Drawing parallels with the removal of fuel subsidies on petrol, Oyedele proposed the suspension of VAT on diesel to counteract the rising prices and potential inflationary effects. He stressed that this proposal was a tentative step toward addressing a prevalent concern.

While Oyedele acknowledged that this suggestion does not guarantee implementation, he emphasized the committee's intention to present it for consideration and discussion. The committee's primary objective during this initial period is to tackle pressing issues that have long been recognized but remained unaddressed.

Oyedele, a former Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), outlined the broader scope of the committee's agenda. Over the next six months, the committee plans to enact significant tax reforms, streamline tax laws, introduce executive orders, and establish comprehensive regulations. The committee, inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu, has been granted a one-year timeline to execute its policies, with the 30-day, six-month, and one-year phases progressing concurrently.

Notably, Oyedele highlighted the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the most suitable entity for revenue collection on behalf of ministries, departments, and agencies. He also underscored the committee's commitment to addressing excess bank charges and reducing the multitude of taxes and levies imposed on businesses. With the aim of enhancing efficiency and reducing complexities, the committee's vision involves consolidating the number of taxes to a more manageable figure of around 10.

As Nigeria navigates the complex landscape of fiscal reforms and economic adjustments, the insights and proposals put forth by the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms hold the potential to shape the nation's financial trajectory and alleviate some of the challenges associated with subsidy removal and revenue generation.

NLC and TUC Demand Modular Refineries and Petroleum Depots in Akwa Ibom State

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Sunny James, alongside his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, recently voiced their call for the federal government to establish modular refineries and petroleum depots in the state. Akwa Ibom is one of Nigeria's oil-producing states, making it a crucial location for such facilities.

The demand was made during a protest against the removal of fuel subsidy and the resulting hardships faced by Nigerians. The workers from both NLC and TUC, carrying placards with various demands, marched to the Government House, State House of Assembly, and major streets in Uyo, the state capital.

Comrade Abang, the TUC Chairman, emphasized the importance of functional refineries for the nation's economy. He also stressed the necessity for the government to release palliatives to micro, small, and medium enterprises to stimulate economic growth, including salary increments for workers.

Comrade James, the NLC Chairperson, expressed regret that despite being an oil-producing state, Akwa Ibom lacked essential facilities like modular refineries and petroleum depots. He believed that having such facilities would contribute to reducing the price of petroleum products in the state.

Moreover, Comrade James observed a lack of political will from the Presidential Steering Committee to execute the promised palliatives. He asserted that Nigerians should not continue to be taken for granted and demanded the government's prompt action in addressing the prevailing challenges.

In response to the protest and the workers' demands, Governor Umo Eno assured the organized labor that his administration would establish a palliative committee to ensure the effective distribution of palliatives in the state. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by the citizens and expressed appreciation for the peaceful nature of the protest.

Governor Eno revealed that the state government had received a circular of the federal government's palliatives released to states and appealed for ten more days to commence distribution. He promised to work towards the acquisition of buses from Innoson Motors to benefit the workers.

Additionally, the governor announced the release of one billion naira to address the gratuity of primary school teachers, a significant step in fulfilling his commitment to public service.

The joint call by the NLC and TUC for the establishment of modular refineries and petroleum depots in Akwa Ibom State highlights the importance of such facilities in an oil-producing region. The protest also brings attention to the need for palliatives to alleviate economic hardships faced by Nigerians. Governor Umo Eno's responsiveness and commitment to addressing the workers' concerns demonstrate the government's willingness to find solutions and ensure the welfare of the citizens. As the state awaits the implementation of these measures, it is essential for all stakeholders to work together towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.

Subsidy protest: We’ll make our decision known Thursday – NLC after meeting Tinubu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been at the forefront of a protest against the recent removal of fuel subsidy. As the nation grapples with the economic impacts of this decision, the NLC's actions have garnered significant attention. In this article, we will delve into the details of the protest, the NLC's stance, and what the future holds for this critical issue.

Understanding the NLC Protest

The NLC's protest centers around the lack of palliatives to mitigate the adverse effects of fuel subsidy removal. President Joe Ajaero, speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, emphasized that the decision to suspend or continue the protest would be revealed soon. He acknowledged Tinubu's understanding of protests, given his history as a pro-democracy activist.

The President's Stand

Contrary to some speculations, President Tinubu did not coerce the organized labor into ending their industrial action. Instead, he engaged in discussions and made commitments in line with the Senate's proposals. These commitments were presented to the NLC for review, and the decisions on the way forward were to be taken collectively.

Collective Decision Making

The NLC's president stated that no single individual had the authority to call off the protest. It was a collective decision that would involve the participation of the entire team. The commitments made by President Tinubu were subject to scrutiny at the NLC's EXCO meeting, where detailed analysis and discussions would occur. Simultaneously, the NLC would also convene their NEC meeting to consider the broader implications of their actions.

Assessing the Next Steps

The review process of President Tinubu's commitments and the discussions at both the EXCO and NEC meetings would play a pivotal role in shaping the NLC's next line of action. The decisions taken during these meetings would determine the future direction of the protest and its intensity.

The Importance of Palliatives

One of the primary reasons for the NLC's protest is the need for palliatives to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the Nigerian population. The absence of these measures has contributed to the growing frustration and unrest among the citizens, leading to widespread support for the NLC's cause.

Nigerian Government Cuts Off Power Supplies to Niger Republic Following Political Upheaval

In the wake of a military junta overthrowing Niger's elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, the Nigerian government has taken a decisive step by cutting off power supplies to its neighboring country, the Niger Republic. This move came shortly after an emergency meeting convened by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where sanctions, including freezing utility services, were imposed on Niger Republic due to the coup, according to Daily Trust reports.

Power Disruption in Niger Republic

Nigelec, the electricity company in Niger, announced the suspension of power supplies from Nigeria. Cities such as Maradi, Zinder, and Niamey experienced an hour of electricity before facing up to five hours of blackouts. Such power outages are rare in Niger, a country that typically enjoys consistent and reliable electricity supplies.

The Impact of the Nigerian Government's Decision

The Nigerian government's decision to cut off power supplies has significant implications for Niger Republic. Approximately 70 percent of Niger Republic's electricity supply is dependent on Nigeria, primarily sourced from the Kainji Dam. With this supply disruption, Niger Republic faces challenges in meeting its energy demands, potentially impacting daily life, businesses, and essential services.

Political Tensions in the Region

The political situation in Niger Republic remains tense after the military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The actions of the ECOWAS member states, including Nigeria, to impose sanctions reflect the regional concern over the political upheaval and its potential consequences. Cutting off power supplies serves as a strong message to the military junta and underscores the seriousness of the situation.

Regional Cooperation and Stability

The situation in Niger Republic highlights the importance of regional cooperation and stability in West Africa. ECOWAS's intervention and the subsequent actions taken by member states demonstrate a collective effort to address political crises and maintain peace and stability in the region.

The Importance of Electricity in Development

The power outage in Niger Republic also brings attention to the crucial role of electricity in a country's development. Reliable access to electricity is essential for economic growth, social development, and overall well-being. The disruption of power supplies underscores the significance of energy security and the need for diversified energy sources to reduce dependency on a single provider.

Bilateral Relations between Nigeria and Niger Republic

The power supply cut-off has implications not only for Niger Republic but also for the bilateral relations between Nigeria and its neighbor. Both countries share historical, cultural, and economic ties, making cooperation and constructive engagement crucial for the prosperity of the region.

The Nigerian government's decision to cut off power supplies to Niger Republic following the military coup signals a strong stance by ECOWAS member states against political instability. As Niger Republic grapples with power outages and its implications, regional cooperation and diplomatic efforts will play a pivotal role in resolving the crisis. The situation also calls for a renewed focus on energy security and the importance of reliable electricity supply for a nation's development.

Tinubu to submit ministerial list to Senate in 48 hours – Bamidele

In a momentous announcement, the Senate Leader, Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele, revealed that the long-awaited ministerial list is set to be delivered to the Senate within the next 48 hours. This eagerly anticipated disclosure was made during the celebration of Bamidele's 60th birthday anniversary lecture and book presentation in Abuja.

During his birthday phone call, President Bola Tinubu personally informed Bamidele of the development, expressing his regret for not being able to attend the birthday lecture. The reason cited was that the President needed to submit an essential communication to the Senate within the specified timeframe. This communication is expected to contain the comprehensive ministerial list, outlining the nominees for key ministerial positions in the government.

As the nation eagerly awaits the unveiling of the ministerial list, notable figures, including the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, have used the occasion to call for positive changes in the conduct of political office holders. Prof. Ogundipe emphasized the importance of empathy during these challenging times, suggesting that reducing the number of vehicles in official convoys could symbolize solidarity with the Nigerian people.

Prof. Ogundipe particularly stressed that agencies like the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) should not be part of the entourage of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, as long as adequate police presence is ensured. The call for a streamlined and more empathetic approach to official convoys aims to demonstrate sensitivity to the everyday struggles faced by the citizens.

As we eagerly await the unveiling of the ministerial list, the nation looks forward to welcoming new leaders who will play crucial roles in shaping the government's policies and objectives. Moreover, Prof. Ogundipe's call for empathy and conscious leadership serves as a timely reminder that our political leaders should always be attuned to the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
