Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused politicians of diverting palliatives meant to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. In a statement, HURIWA coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko lamented that millions of Nigerians are facing starvation and death due to the government's poor economic policies and insecurity. The group criticized President Tinubu's administration for failing to deliver on its promise of renewed hope and prosperity, despite assurances of a social security structure and cash transfers. HURIWA recalled that President Tinubu had promised that the framework for palliatives to remedy the effects of fuel subsidy removal was being worked out, but the situation has only worsened. HURIWA alleged that suspended officials of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation embezzled funds meant for palliatives, and that governors and high-ranking officials stole palliatives meant for starving Nigerians. The group urged President Tinubu to order the Department of State Services, EFCC, and ICPC to monitor the distribution of palliatives to prevent further diversion. HURIWA emphasized that the government's failure to provide for the welfare and well-being of citizens is a constitutional breach, and that the President must take immediate action to address the crisis. The group warned that the country is on the brink of a humanitarian disaster, and that urgent measures are needed to prevent mass deaths from starvation.
