The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that parts of Rivers and Bayelsa states will face an extended blackout due to the destruction of 13 transmission towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuits. This malicious act by vandals will leave residents without power for several months.
According to Ndidi Mbah, TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, the company is urging the governments of Rivers and Bayelsa states to assist in addressing the escalating vandalism of its installations. This recent incident follows a previous attack on the same transmission line.
TCN had recently awarded a contract to reinforce towers 19-31 on the Ahoada-Yenagoa line, but the latest vandalism poses a significant challenge. The affected towers are located in various communities, including Okobe, Emezhi 1, Mbiama, and Igbogene.
The company warns that rebuilding and restoring power supply will take several months due to the extent of the damage. TCN appeals for collaboration among security operatives and host communities to combat the rising vandalism of critical electricity facilities.
The people of Rivers and Bayelsa states will bear the brunt of this senseless destruction, facing months of darkness. It's imperative for authorities and communities to join forces to prevent such incidents and ensure a stable power supply.
