Farmers Warned: Planting Crops at Dumpsites May Lead to Cancer

Professor Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka, a soil science expert at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, has cautioned farmers against planting crops at dumpsites, warning that it could lead to cancer. Speaking during a community outreach event, she expressed concerns about poor soil texture in the southeast region and advocated for measures to mitigate looming food insecurity. Onwuka identified harmful cultural practices such as bush burning, population pressure, climate change, erosion, and indiscriminate fertilizer use as major factors affecting soil fertility and leading to poor yields. She warned farmers to avoid planting crops at waste dump sites, as heavy metals like mercury, lead, and chromium can be absorbed by crops and lead to cancer and other health conditions. The professor also addressed the recent surge in food prices, encouraging Nigerians to grow their own crops. She demonstrated biochar production and organic fertilizer conversion using domestic and agricultural waste, urging Abia farmers to utilize MOUAU's community services to boost food production. Onwuka lamented the difficulty rural women face in accessing fertilizers and emphasized the importance of extending research innovations to rural farmers to enhance food production in Abia and Nigeria.

Former Golden Eaglets striker Stanley Iheanacho has completed a transfer to Clube Deportivo de Mafra, a Liga Portugal 2 team.

The 19-year-old signed a five-year contract with CD Mafra, committing his future to the club until June 2029.

Iheanacho joins CD Mafra from FC Midtylland, a Danish Superliga side. Although he impressed in a cup match against Aabenraa BK, scoring four goals on his debut in September 2023, he failed to make a league appearance for the club.

Tragedy struck in China on Wednesday when a devastating fire broke out at a shopping center in the southwestern city of Zigong, claiming the lives of 16 people. The incident occurred at a 14-story commercial building, which houses a department store, offices, restaurants, and a movie theater. Firefighters responded swiftly to the emergency, arriving at the scene shortly after 6 pm and rescuing 75 people from the inferno. However, the cause of the fire and the number of people in the building at the time of the outbreak remain unknown. Dramatic videos showed thick black smoke billowing from the lower levels of the building, engulfing the entire structure as firefighters battled the blaze using water sprays and drones. The incident highlights the alarming rise in fire fatalities in China, with 947 reported by May this year, a 19% increase from the same period last year.  The University of Ibadan management has held a meeting with student representatives to address the ongoing protests on campus.

The students, led by Students' Union President Bolaji Aweda, have been demonstrating against various issues, including the recent introduction of 10-hour daily electricity supply, fee hikes, compulsory GES textbooks, poor welfare conditions, inadequate security, and victimization of students who participated in earlier protests.

Aweda presented the students' grievances to the management, emphasizing the need for improved living and learning conditions on campus.

In response, Professor Peter Olapegba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), explained that the new electricity policy was necessitated by the high monthly bills paid to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The meeting aimed to find a resolution to the ongoing protests and address the students' concerns. The management's response and willingness to engage with the students' union may help to alleviate tensions and find a way forward for the university community.

Former LP presidential campaign manager Balami returns to APC

In a surprising turn of events, Nigerian aviation expert and youth activist, Isaac Balami, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) back to his former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Balami, who previously served as the National Deputy Campaign Manager for the Obi/Datti presidential campaign in 2023, made the announcement on Wednesday while addressing journalists in Abuja.

Balami had initially left the APC in 2023 due to the party's decision to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket, featuring President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. However, he has now reversed his stance, stating that the current administration has proven him wrong. He acknowledged that the Muslim-Muslim ticket was the primary reason for his departure, but he has come to realize that it holds little significance.

Balami praised President Tinubu's administration for its efforts in promoting equity and appointing credible Nigerians to key positions. He highlighted the president's outreach to the Middle Belt region, stating that no previous administration has worked as closely with the region as the current one. Balami expressed his optimism for Nigeria's future under the APC's leadership, saying, "I can see a Nigeria that, in a few years, will thrive." Following consultations with leaders across Nigeria, his family, and the Middle Belt caucus, Balami resigned from the Labour Party and returned to the APC.

Cholera's Hidden Threat: Scientist Umeh Warns Many Don't Know They're Infected

Pharmacist Umeh Camillus Chibueze, MD/CEO of Camillus Pharmaceuticals, has warned that many people are unaware they have been infected with cholera, a highly infectious disease that can lead to dehydration and death if left untreated. Chibueze attributes the spread of cholera to poor sanitation, crowding, and inadequate healthcare, and criticizes the government for not doing enough to stem the tide. Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, found in contaminated food or water. Symptoms include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can lead to death if left untreated. Chibueze notes that most people infected with cholera are unaware of their status, and can still infect others through contaminated water or food. To prevent the spread of cholera, Chibueze recommends avoiding tap water, well water, raw food, and undercooked seafood. He also advises drinking bottled water, eating prepackaged food, disinfecting water, washing fruits and vegetables with clean water, and avoiding street vendor food. Chibueze emphasizes the importance of hand hygiene, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Chibueze also criticizes the government's response to the cholera outbreak, citing a lack of effective policy and awareness. He calls for increased education and awareness, similar to the approach taken by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US. By taking preventive measures and improving healthcare infrastructure, Chibueze believes that cholera can be prevented and controlled.

‘My miracle soap has government approval’ – Prophet Jeremiah (VIDEO)

Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, the founder of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministries (CMDM), has responded to criticism over his "miracle soap" product, stating that it has received approval from the Nigerian government. The product, which includes soap, perfume, and water, was launched by Fufeyin to promote spiritual growth and well-being.

However, Abel Damina, the founder of Power City International in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has condemned the product, accusing Fufeyin of being a businessman rather than a prophet. In a video response, Fufeyin defended his product, revealing that it has a registered number from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Fufeyin claimed that he has personally used the soap and achieved success, stating, "I used it and succeeded with it. Something you don't know quite." He encouraged those suffering to try the soap, asking, "Are you not tired of suffering?" The controversy surrounding Fufeyin's miracle products continues to spark debate among Nigerians.

Ill-Treatment of Nigerians Abroad: Group Calls for Government Intervention
nigeran ill-treatment abroad
Dynamic Ambassadors for Social Transformation and Orientation Initiative, a advocacy group, has condemned the continued mistreatment of Nigerians in diaspora, describing the situation as alarming. The group visited the headquarters of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja to protest the general maltreatment of Nigerian citizens abroad, with a specific focus on the detention of Pastor Benjamin Egbaji in Benin Republic. According to DAILY POST, Nigerians had recently staged a protest at the Benin Republic Embassy in Abuja, urging the Nigerian government to intervene in Pastor Egbaji's case and address the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in several countries. Samson Eze, media coordinator of the group, led the delegation to NiDCOM and stated that over 5,000 Nigerians are currently detained in Benin Republic, in addition to Pastor Egbaji. Eze expressed disappointment that the Nigerian government has not taken sufficient action to address the situation, despite the country's proximity to Nigeria. He called on the government to apply the principle of reciprocity and demonstrate its power in response to the unacceptable behavior from the authorities in Benin Republic. The group also suggested that Pastor Egbaji may have been set up due to his popularity in the country, and lamented the hatred and victimization of Nigerians in diaspora. Responding, NiDCOM spokesman Abdur-Rahman Balogun assured the group that the government has intervened in Pastor Egbaji's case by providing additional legal representation, which he believes will help in his case. Balogun stated that the government will apply diplomatic efforts to ensure justice for the Nigerian detainee, but advised Nigerians to be law-abiding in their host countries. He emphasized that the government's intervention would be more effective if cases against Nigerians abroad are not based on criminality and infringement of the laws of their host countries. The group's visit to NiDCOM is a follow-up to their previous protests and calls for the government to take action against the maltreatment of Nigerians in diaspora. The continued detention of Pastor Egbaji and other Nigerians in Benin Republic has sparked outrage among Nigerians, with many calling for the government to take decisive action to protect its citizens abroad.
